Mission Statement:

The Cooling Technology Institute is a broad-based industry association. Our mission is to advocate and promote, for the benefit of the public, the use of all environmentally responsible commercial cooling technologies such as wet cooling towers, air-cooled condensers, dry coolers, indirect cooling, and hybrid systems by encouraging education, the development of codes, standards, and guidelines, the use and oversight of independent performance verification and certification programs, research and development, information exchange, and dialog with government agencies and organizations with a shared interest in evaporative heat rejection equipment.

History of CTI:

Water Cooling Tower Association

The forerunner of CTI was formed in mid-1939.  It was a trade association composed of seven companies that manufactured cooling towers.  The companies were Binks, C.H. Wheeler, Fluor Corp, Foster Wheeler, Lillie-Hoffmann, Marley, and Schubert Christy.  The organization was formed for the purpose of industry betterment and the establishment of design standards.  The organization lasted for less than two years.

Cooling Tower Institute

In 1950, CTI was formed by seven charter members.  The organization was headquartered in Basking Ridge, NJ.  The members were Fluor Corp (Los Angeles, CA), Foster Wheeler Corp (NY, NY), Hudson Engineering Corp (Houston, TX), Lillie-Hoffman Cooling Towers (St. Louis, MO), The Marley Company (Kansas City, KS), J.F. Pritchard & Co (Kansas City, MO) and C.H. Wheeler Manufacturing Co (Philadelphia, PA).  CTI also began as a trade association for the purpose of industry betterment and the establishment of industry standards.

CTI transitioned to an industry association, including owner-operators and suppliers during the early 1960s.  Some of the founding companies had left the trade association between 1959 and 1965, and with the gradual inclusion of owner-operators and suppliers, the organization evolved the need to reorganize.  In 1966, much of the current organization was reorganized into three interest groups around manufacturers, suppliers, and owner-operators, with a nine-person board of directors, three in each group that had staggered 3-year terms.  The organization remained as one based on corporate memberships.  Presidents were elected by the membership, rotating through the interest groups.

Cooling Technology Institute

Later, CTI has added individual memberships for owner-operators and students.  In 2000, the scope of CTI was broadened to include all heat rejection equipment, not only cooling towers.  The operating name of the organization was changed to the Cooling Technology Institute.
